Are kei trucks street legal in my state?
There is no single answer. The 25-year rule decides whether a kei truck can be imported. Your state decides whether it can be registered and driven on public roads, and states handle it differently.
How states tend to treat them
Broadly, states fall into a few groups: some title and register an imported kei truck like any other imported vehicle, some allow road use with limits (for example on lower-speed roads), and some allow them for farm or off-road use only. The rules change, and a state's own wording matters, so do not rely on a forum post or a seller's say-so.
Ask your motor vehicle department these questions first
- Will you title and register a vehicle imported under the 25-year rule, with a Japanese bill of sale and the customs entry papers?
- Are there speed limits or road types an imported kei truck is restricted to?
- Do you require a VIN inspection, and what do you accept as the vehicle identification for a Japanese truck?
- What insurance do you require, and will insurers cover it?
- Does it need an emissions or safety inspection?
