Buying a Daihatsu Hijet from Japan

Which bed it has matters

Plain flat bed, dump bed and a few special bodies all exist. A dump bed is a different truck to use, so say which you want when you ask us to look.

Mileage is high and that is normal

A kei truck that has worked a Japanese farm or delivery round often shows a six-figure odometer. Condition and service history say more about it than the number does.

Fire-pumper versions exist

Some Hijets were built as small fire engines. They are a novelty import and priced as one; tell us if that is what you are after.

Can I drive it on the road?

Road legality for imported kei trucks is set state by state. Some states register them for normal road use, some limit them to lower-speed roads, and some allow farm or off-road use only. Check your state motor vehicle department before you buy.

What it costs to land one in the US

A kei truck is cheap to buy in Japan, but shipping, customs and clearance cost about the same as for any other vehicle, so they matter more on a small purchase. Work out the full cost here and read how the 25-Year Rule works.
