Buying a Honda Acty from Japan
Mid-engine layout
The engine sits between the axles, under the bed. That helps traction and handling but means servicing is done through the bed, so it is worth asking how it has been maintained.
Parts and know-how
Honda Acty parts and workshop knowledge are easier to find than for some rivals. That is a good reason to pick one if you plan to keep it running for years.
4WD and manual are the popular pairing
Part-time 4WD with a five-speed manual is what most buyers ask for and is the combination we look for first.
Can I drive it on the road?
Road legality for imported kei trucks is set state by state. Some states register them for normal road use, some limit them to lower-speed roads, and some allow farm or off-road use only. Check your state motor vehicle department before you buy.
What it costs to land one in the US
A kei truck is cheap to buy in Japan, but shipping, customs and clearance cost about the same as for any other vehicle, so they matter more on a small purchase. Work out the full cost here and read how the 25-Year Rule works.
